NOVA quick recap.

I am going to expand on this in later posts, but I wanted to quickly recap how I did at NOVA.

On Thursday, I was crushed by Andrew Sutton in my Whiskey Challenge.
On Saturday I went 4-0, putting me into the top 16 bracket for Sunday.
I was the only 4-0 Imperial Guard player.
On Sunday I went 2-2.

So I finished as a Tournament Ace (which I got a cool medal for) and ended the tournament at 6-2.
My losses were to Tony Kopach (in Round 6) and Brad Townsend (aka Hulksmash) in Round 7.

Sandwyrm at Back40K has been complaining nonstop about terrain placement. Comparing his list to yours (or at least, the one you posted for Throne of Skulls), I can see why he struggled so much with terrain.

Your IG: can stand off or move. Most units can do either. You also have only about 100 points of fluff/fun in a mean, lean list.

His IG: has to move forward en masse or loses effectiveness. He has nearly 300 points of fluff/fun, and another 300 points of not-so-effective-if-I-can't-move, in a list that isn't so lean and mean.

Fortunately, he's got an answer to his problems: the terrain.

So, having been IG ace at the tournament, lay it on us: how was the terrain at NOVA?

You did well Mike.

@TFO - I think the terrain was too focused towards the middle and blocked a ton of line of sight. Though it was good looking terrain.

In my opinion, there was too much terrain, all of it classified as "area", which led to a few oddities as well as way too much infantry cover. None of it is impassable.

I felt like there was about 30-40% of the board covered with terrain. I have no quantitative data though, it was just a feeling.

I dislike the large LOS blocking piece of terrain in the center of every board. I feel it gives assault armies a huge advantage. It also heavily favors Grey Knights and most Space Wolf lists (the ones I ran into), who love being in the center of the board.

In my first game, I immobilized 4 of my own vehicles. Probably close to 15 in 8 games.

However, I was able to deal with all of this by crafty deployment and checking LoS as I deployed/moved. My game with Andrew Sutton taught me a big lesson about it.

I do not agree with the terrain, but I was prepared for it. I know how Mike Brandt likes to do terrain. He is always open about it.

I met Sandwyrm (and Farmpunk, I believe; none of us used our internet aliases) I didn't love his list. Too much reliance on LoS and high AP guns.

All that being said. Those guys did a great job getting so much terrain ready. There were around 150 tables. (40k and Fantasy)

To echo Gramps. The terrain was more "central focused". Most of it was solid and did block a ton of LoS.

I can't say that it influenced the games. The top 16 were mostly all awesome players you would expect in the top 16. (I realize there is some self aggrandizement there)

Wow, didn't realize I had a wall-o-text brewing.
